Learning the First Stitch

Every journey begins with someone willing to teach…

Every journey has a beginning, and mine started long before CJ’s Needle Works became a business. It began with a sewing machine, a classroom, and a teacher who believed that creating something by hand was a skill worth learning.

During high school, my Home Economics teacher, Mrs. White, introduced me to sewing. Every Saturday became a day of measuring fabric, threading needles, and creating Sunday dresses for myself, my mother, and my three sisters.

Those dresses weren’t simply clothing.

They were lessons in patience.

Lessons in responsibility.

Lessons in creating something with love that someone else would cherish.

Looking back, I didn’t realize I was learning much more than sewing—I was learning a way of life.

A Lifetime of Learning

One skill led to another…

My curiosity never stopped with sewing.

With two sharpened pencils serving as knitting needles, my cousin Victoria patiently taught me how to knit.

Soon afterward, a beginner’s crochet book from our local TG&Y became one of my greatest treasures. One stitch at a time, I taught myself a craft that would become part of who I am.

Over the years, that love of learning continued to grow.

Crochet.

Knitting.

Cross-stitch.

Sewing.

Embroidery.

Doll making.

Every new skill became another way to create something meaningful with my own hands.

Creating for My Family

Love gave every stitch a greater purpose...

Life has a wonderful way of giving our gifts a greater purpose.

When my husband and I welcomed our two daughters, my love for creating took on an entirely new meaning.

Tiny sweaters.

Little dresses.

One of my greatest joys was watching my second daughter wear many of the same handmade treasures her older sister had once worn.
